The CW has announced pilots of several new shows for the 2021-2022 season including a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls and a new Ava DuVernay superhero show.

What We Know:

  • According to Complex, the reboot of the popular 90s children’s cartoon will feature the characters in adulthood. Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles have grown resentful after losing their childhoods to fighting crimebut the trio is forced to confront their feelings and unite to fight for a greater cause
  • The live-action series will be executive produced by Juno‘s Diablo Cody and Veronica Mars’ Heather Regnier. According to Deadline, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will also serve as executive producers for Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television.
  • American filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s show, titled Naomi, is a superpowered mystery in a small Northwestern town that follows a young teenage girl discovering new secrets about her hometown while she learns about her own origins. DuVernay will executive produce for ARRAY Filmworks, with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes producing. Warner Bros. Television will serve as the studio.
  • The show is based on a 2109 DC comic superhero of the same name from “Powers” and “House of M” writer Brian Bendis and David F. Walker. In the original stand-alone comic series, Naomi has energy-based powers as well as an ability to transform into a superpowered state that can grant her incredible strength and other abilities.

Although it’s not clear which shows will air past their first pilot, we’re interested to see what The CW can make of these ideas.
