A North Bergen man, who failed to get medical care for his infant daughter after dropping and fracturing her skull in 2018, has been charged with murder.

What We Know:

  • Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez stated Wednesday that a grand jury indictment charged 27-year-old Raul Torres on December 17 in Khaleesi Torres’ death. Khaleesi was his 4-month-old daughter who died from traumatic brain injuries in March 2018. Torres was charged with murder and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
  • The Jersey Journal previously reported that Khaleesi was unresponsive and not breathing when she was taken by ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center on February 13.
  • Detectives with the Special Victims Unit of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office were notified at the time that Khaleesi had injuries on her forehead, a partial skull fracture, and a subdural hemorrhage. The child also had injuries to her left foot, left knee, right forehead, right chest, both shoulders, right back, and right bicep, as reported by the initial criminal complaint, which also declared there was dried blood on her right ear.
  • Khaleesi was brought to Newark Beth Israel, where she later died of her wounds on March 3, 2018.
  • At Torres’ detention trial in February 2018, before Khaleesi died, an assistant prosecutor stated Torres, who lived in Jersey City at the time, confessed to authorities that he had dropped the girl.
  • At the trial, the assistant prosecutor told Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale that according to Torres he “knew there was something wrong with the baby, but just put her back in her crib”.
  • Suarez merited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, the Jersey City Police Department, and the North Bergen Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

Police detained Raul Torres, 27, after a December 17 grand jury indictment, officials said. Torres was taken into custody during a Tuesday traffic stop by North Bergen police.
