Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian get really real about marriage. And it’s not all sunshine and roses. More inside…

You meet the person of your dreams. You get married. Everything should be smooth sailing from that point on, right? Wrong. Marriage is work. And any married person will tell you that if they’re being honest.

Tennis superstar Serena Williams isn’t one to sugar coat anything. So when the topic about her marriage to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian came up during a Q&A for Bumble, the 39-year-old tennis champion kept it all the way 100.

”Marriage is not, BUT it can be,” Serena said in the ad.

The tennis superstar and the 37-year-old Reddit co-founder tied the knot in September 2017 and they share a three-year-old daughter, Olympia.

Life isn’t perfect, but they’re willing to put in the work to make it perfect for them.

“I learned that love is an amazing feeling and if you have an opportunity to feel it, then it’s a special thing,” she said. “Heartbreak is a part of life, whether it be a loved one, a boyfriend, or an animal, but time heals all wounds.”

There are deal breakers, though. ‘Rena doesn’t play when it comes to “having loyalty” and we don’t blame her. She also revealed she always knew she wanted kids at some point in her life.

When it comes to friendship – who has besties like Meghan Markle – Serena is real big on energy.

“In a friend, I like someone that’s really funny,” she shared. “Energy that is fun and delightful and easy to be around, and positive. I need somebody positive in my life.”

The Reddit co-founder shared the same relationship values on his Twitter:

“People gotta be more honest about how marriage isn’t bliss without work,” he tweeted. “I think it’s even more work when it’s interracial marriage (and most of the time it’s on me, tbh). We need more sunlight these days, not less. Appreciate S for leading per usual.”

Social media will have you believing people don’t have problems in their relationships and that’s not the case. Every relationship has its issues. It’s up to the people involved to figure out if the relationship is worth putting in the work for a successful situation.
