EGOT John Legend is producing a biopic about late comedian Bernie Mac and his daughter already has a few actors she would like to see portray her dad.

More about the biopic and why she chose Aldis Hodge & Mark Phillips inside…

A biopic about legendary comedian Bernie Mac is in the works. And EGOT John Legend is behind it.

The singer’s production company, Get Lifted, has teamed up with Bernie Mac’s estate to create a biopic about the life and career of the late comedian. John Legend’s producing partner, Mike Jackson, spilled the biopic tea during a panel discussion at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” Jackson said, seemingly surprising Legend as he said the info was “something that John doesn’t know about yet” and that he was “very excited about” the deal, which “just happened today.”

“Look at you breaking news over here,” the “All Of Me” singer said in response.

Mike Jackson explained how the project marks a full-circle moment as John Legend appeared in one of Mac’s final films.

“The Soul Men reunion you all wanted to see,” Legend said. In the 2008 film, Legend portrayed Marcus Hooks, the bandmember Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Mac) honor in a reunion concert after he dies.

“It’s about the opportunities to tell a story that you feel are important,” Jackson said.

The biopic is set to be a feature film, but no other details have been released as of yet.

While production hasn’t even started yet, Bernie Mac’s daughter is already throwing out names she would like to see portray her father.

Je’Niece McCullough – daughter of Bernie Mac – told TMZ she would like to see either actor Aldis Hodge or YouTuber Mark Phillips play Bernie in the biopic.

Bernie’s daughter feels Aldis is a good contender to play Bernie as an adult as he has already flexed his acting chops when he played MC Ren in Ice Cube‘s Straight Outta Compton and NFL legend Jim Brown in Regina King’s One Night in Miami. On the flip side, she feels Mark Phillips – prominent contributor to the RDCworld1 YouTube channel – would be a good contender to play a younger Bernie. She said her daughter loves Mark and always says how much he reminds her of Bernie.

In August 2008, Bernie Mac died from complications of Pneumonia.

We’re not mad at either of these choices. Botha re FINE.  We’ll keep you posted on any new updates about the Bernie biopic when they become available.

Are you here for it?
